Cultural Glossary

Understanding the words and traditions that guide our community and heritage.

Afrikana
[ah-free-KAH-nah]
Our unique identity honoring African heritage while building unity in Louisville. More than "African" — it represents collective strength, pride, and shared journey.
"We are not just African, we are Afrikana: proud, united, and powerful."
Ubuntu
[oo-BOON-too]
African philosophy meaning "I am because we are." It emphasizes our interconnectedness and collective humanity — the foundation of our community support.
Our programs embody Ubuntu by supporting each family as part of our larger community family.
Harambee
[hah-ram-BEH]
A Kenyan tradition of community self-help. Means "all pull together" — representing collective work for the common good.
Our community events and volunteer efforts reflect the spirit of Harambee.
Diaspora
[die-AS-por-ah]
Communities of people who have migrated from their ancestral homelands. We serve the African diaspora community in Louisville.
Our center bridges the African diaspora with American communities while preserving cultural heritage.
Headwrap
[HED-rap]
Traditional African head covering worn as expression of heritage, dignity, and cultural identity. Known by many names: gele, dhuku, tukwi, and more across cultures.
We celebrate the diverse ways African women express their cultural heritage and identity.
Somali
[so-MAH-lee]
Relating to Somalia or its people. Many of our community members are Somali immigrants and refugees who have made Louisville their home.
We provide Somali language support and culturally appropriate services for Somali families.
ESL
[E-S-L]
English as a Second Language. Educational programs helping non-native English speakers develop language skills for daily life and employment.
Our ESL classes help new immigrants communicate effectively and integrate into Louisville communities.
Cultural Preservation
[KUHL-cher-uhl prez-er-VAY-shun]
The practice of maintaining and passing down cultural traditions, languages, and customs to future generations.
Through language classes, traditional cooking, and celebrations, we ensure African heritage thrives in Louisville.
Swahili
[swah-HEE-lee]
A Bantu language widely spoken in East Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. One of the languages spoken by our community members.
Our multilingual staff includes Swahili speakers to serve East African families in their native language.
Empowerment
[em-POW-er-ment]
Building confidence, skills, and resources enabling individuals and communities to take control of their lives and make positive changes.
Through education and leadership development, we empower African families to thrive in Louisville.
Mentorship
[MEN-tor-ship]
A relationship where experienced community members guide youth in personal, academic, and professional development.
Our mentorship programs pair African youth with successful community leaders to foster growth.
Refugee Resettlement
[ref-yoo-JEE ree-SET-uhl-ment]
Helping refugees establish new lives in a safe country, including housing, employment, education, and community integration.
We connect newly arrived refugees and immigrants with resources, referrals, and community support to help build successful lives in Louisville.
